Football Casual culture is not musically led. By this we mean, unlike many other movements within general culture, Casuals cannot be painted with one particular musical brush. It's universally accepted that Casual Culture first came to prominence in the late 70's - just as disco was dying and Punk was becoming a flash-in-the-pan craze. Around this time mod was making a revival after the film Quadrophenia was released. Soon after, the much under-appreciated post-punk scene was also gaining popularity, as well as the emerging Ska and Oi scenes - all of which Casuals could be found.
By the time the 80's came around, the Casual's vinyl collection looked like an eclectic mix. Some Casuals also got caught up with sugary pop bands such as Wham, ABC, Human League, Spandau Ballet and Adam and The Ants - although very few would admit as much these days.
The late 80's and early 90's gave birth to the Madchester and Rave scenes where a number of Casuals could be found 'having it' or being 'loved up'. The mid 90's revived the 'lad culture' of Britain as BritPop took over the world. However, by the late 90's BritPop was just a hazy memory as mediocre pop dominated the mainstream airwaves.
Since then, the Indie music scene has generally been the most popular musical style for many new Casuals. However, this has it flaws. The much talked-about Parrothead cross-over has affected Casual fashion trends as well as well as the musical tastes.
Although quite general, below are a selection of bands which we believe have Football Casual credibility. Click on the band names for more information:
