BJÖRN BORG

Bjorn BorgSweden is renowned for many things – meatballs, ABBA and Dolph Lundgren, but its biggest football casual influence comes from one man, and that is Björn Borg.
Hailing from Stockholm, Borg is often regarded as the greatest tennis player of all time – winning 11 Grand Slam titles between 1974 and 1981. He retired at the age of 26 in 1984, leaving an impressive record of winning 90% of the Grand Slam single matches he played.
As well as an impressive career record, Borg was regarded as a tennis pin-up. With looks that drove women insatiable with desire, it was his sense of coolness and style which men admired. By the early eighties tennis chic was all the rage. Lads from modest working class backgrounds were suddenly acquiring expensive European sportswear such as Diadora Borg Elite trainers, FILA Bj Settanta jackets and FILA Bj striped polos – all of which were heavily worn and endorsed by the Swede. Although other tennis brands were popular around this time too, it was Borg’s style that proved the most influential of all, by putting the Diadora Borg Elite and FILA Bj clothing range at the forefront. Many of the items of that era still look great, even by today’s standards. The hunt for vintage FILA Bj originals continues to grow with casual collectors.
